Blenheim Road, ChristchurchBuilt for the International Harvester Company in 1955, the buildings at 447 Blenheim Road provided an interesting challenge to BMC’s engineers in post-quake Christchurch.
BMC were initially engaged to undertake Detailed Engineering Evaluations of the three different structures onsite and to propose a repair strategy to ensure these high-profile buildings could continue to function safely for the occupants.
The project was hampered from the start by a lack of as built plans. Intrusive investigations discovered that like many buildings of the period the structures were built with durable but heavy materials and little seismic capacity. A last minute acquisition of plans from a university collection revealed further structural flaws.
Despite all these setbacks BMC managed to produce the Detailed Engineering Evaluations and a comprehensive plan for strengthening the buildings. Throughout this BMC enjoyed the co-operation of the building owners, tenants and project managers.
