Meet Fraser McDougall our Structural Engineer based in Wanaka.

When he’s not at work, Fraser loves to spend as much time outdoors as possible. As a keen and accomplished skier, he agreed that BMC’s flexible work arrangement allowed him to head up the mountain when the best conditions called.

“Being trusted to self-manage my workload means I can balance my time to get the best of both worlds – I’m happy to work a late night if it means I can get out the next day for some great skiing.  Flexibility is key!”

He says that he thoroughly enjoys being part of an excellent design & build team.

“We all work well together to bring a project to life – it’s equally demanding & rewarding, but it’s also where you can experience real value in your work,” he explained.

Fraser added that working with such a diverse and hard-working team creates a great number of awesome career opportunities.

“We all put in the hard yards and have a strong work ethic and great attitude – it works really well for everyone.”

Meet Helen Wightman from our BMC Wanaka office. She is not only a legendary Engineering Technician, she is a Mum of two, a keen fisher, a talented cook, a volunteer at the walking school bus, loves to ski and has her Masters in rowing! Busy right?

Helen loves the flexibility that BMC offers her.

“I work part-time while being the primary caregiver in my family but I can still successfully meet project deadlines and collaborate on projects with my team, which feels great.”

Helen’s life is a bit of a juggle, meeting deadlines and keeping the family functioning are all hard work however it’s totally manageable for her.

“I have a great work-life balance that allows me to get things done at BMC but also participate in my kid’s school activities, you’ll always find me at school skiing days accompanying my children up the mountain.”

“Having the flexibility to manage my workload in the school holidays is a welcome stress relief. It’s really amazing moments I get to share with my kids because of that flexibility.”

Helen reckons BMC is the place to be.

The flexibility she has to be able to progress her career while supporting her family is just the best. It’s a bonus that there is a great collaboration with an awesome team and supportive leadership.

Helen’s favourite thing about her job is being able to solve problems.

“I love finding great solutions for clients’ project designs. It’s satisfying and rewarding!”

The ability to work a nine-day fortnight has been a gamechanger for Wanaka-based BMC Structural Engineer Taylor Koens.

Prior to working at BMC, both he and his partner worked full-time. Taylor struggled to find enough hours in the week to fit in everything he wanted to do outside of work – like tramping and skiing. He discussed this with his manager, and together they came up with a workable solution.

“BMC offered the option of a nine-day fortnight, which means I have every second Friday off.”

“I’ve now got a much better work-life balance, which frees me up to get out and enjoy the incredible outdoors that Wanaka has on offer.”

“It recharges me so I can bring my A-game to work everyday.”
