SIT Creative Arts Centre - St Johns Church Strengthening

Cat 1 NZ Heritage building gets a 'light look touch' to seismically strengthen the building to >67%NBS(IL2).

St Johns Church, Invercargill is to be a bold visual statement as part of the $17m new Creative Arts Centre for SIT (Southern Institute of Technology). BMC was engaged to provide engineering detailed design & construction monitoring services for the strengthening of the Church and the adjacent / integrated 3 storey new build facility. The strengthening requirements involved providing the minimum of visible structure intervention within a limited budget. BMC analysed the existing structure (solid brick URM) using 3D ETABS software to define stress points / vulnerable elements. Minimal steel structure was added to stabilise these elements in a logical and consistent way to fit in with existing features / corbels etc. A pointcloud laser scan was utilised to create a 3D BIM model, which was used in the creation of structural drawings.
