As part of the refurbishment, the University wished for the seismic capacity of the building to be increased as the opportunity to work in a completely empty building is not common in the bustling Dunedin Campus. BMC completed the design and detailing of a solution which allowed the external elevations of the building to remain untouched to preserve its young, but important Architecture. The solution included internal structural steel brace frames, floor diaphragm connection enhancement, alternate gravity load columns, new concrete foundations, and Micropiles. The final strengthened building will meet and exceed the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code in 2014.
